Maar de weg van vandaag naar die toekomst is niet zonder uitdagingen. In de eerste maanden van het jaar was \u00e9\u00e9n op de vijf verkochte auto&#8217;s in Europa een ge\u00eblektrificeerd voertuig (PHEV of 100% elektrisch). De meerderheid hiervan zijn EV&#8217;s, die goed zijn voor 77% van de verkopen binnen de categorie &#8216;ge\u00eblektrificeerde voertuigen&#8217;. De overige 23% zijn plug-in hybrides. Ook de tweedehandsmarkt komt langzaam op gang. Het tempo is nog niet zo hoog als voor nieuwe auto&#8217;s, omdat de eerste elektrische auto&#8217;s met een behoorlijke actieradius nu pas beschikbaar worden op de tweedehandsmarkt. Over zijn hele levensduur is een elektrische auto milieuvriendelijker dan een auto met een brandstofmotor, maar er zijn nog steeds enkele milieu-uitdagingen. <\/p>\n<h2>Recycling<\/h2>\n<p> Sinds 2006 bepaalt een Europese richtlijn dat ten minste 50% van de materialen in gebruikte batterijen en accu&#8217;s moet worden gerecycled. Deze richtlijn verplicht de producent, dus de autofabrikant, om de gebruikte batterijen op eigen kosten in te zamelen en te recyclen. Maar hoe vindt deze recycling plaats? Lithium-ion batterijen kunnen minstens zeven tot tien jaar in elektrische bussen of auto&#8217;s worden gebruikt. De meeste hebben daarna nog ongeveer 80% van hun oorspronkelijke capaciteit. Het is misschien niet voldoende voor een elektrische auto (EV), vooral als het een ouder model is met een beperkte actieradius, maar het is meer dan genoeg voor andere toepassingen. Bijvoorbeeld: 4.200 zonnepanelen zijn ge\u00efnstalleerd op het dak van de Johan Cruijff Arena, het voetbalstadion van Ajax Amsterdam. Overdag wekken ze stroom op, maar die wordt vooral &#8217;s avonds gebruikt &#8211; voor de stadionverlichting, verschillende schermen en eetkraampjes &#8211; wanneer het voetbalteam speelt. Dat is precies de reden waarom de elektriciteit die overdag wordt opgewekt, wordt opgeslagen in de accu&#8217;s van oude Nissan LEAFs! <\/p>\n<h2>Repareren<\/h2>\n<p> Recycling is \u00e9\u00e9n ding, maar kunt u een defecte batterij repareren? Er wordt momenteel veel onderzoek en ontwikkeling naar gedaan. In een Battery Repair Center (BRC) worden complete voertuigen met een defecte batterij afgeleverd. Zodra het voertuig bij het BRC aankomt, wordt het gedemonteerd met behulp van een speciale heftafel en montagepennen. Voor de reparatie begint, wordt de batterij in verschillende stadia veilig gemaakt om aan te werken. Het reparatieproces is in feite een vervangingsproces. Afzonderlijke cellen die defect zijn, worden niet vervangen. Ze vormen modules van 8 16 of 32 cellen die in serie zijn geschakeld. Wanneer de module met de defecte cel(len) wordt gevonden, wordt de hele module vervangen. <\/p>\n<h2>Ethisch verantwoorde materialen<\/h2>\n<p> De extractie van batterijmaterialen brengt ook enkele uitdagingen met zich mee. Hedendaagse lithium-ionbatterijen zijn samengesteld uit lithium, nikkel, kobalt en mangaan, en deze zeldzame materialen zijn niet gemakkelijk verkrijgbaar. Lithium wordt bijvoorbeeld voornamelijk gedolven in de zoutwoestijnen van Bolivia, Chili en Argentini\u00eb &#8211; vaak de &#8216;lithiumdriehoek&#8217; genoemd &#8211; terwijl kobalt wordt gedolven in de Democratische Republiek Congo. Het winningsproces van deze zeldzame mineralen kan aanzienlijke gevolgen hebben voor het milieu en de mensenrechten, waaronder een enorm waterverbruik, mogelijke negatieve gevolgen op korte termijn voor fauna en flora en, in sommige gevallen, arbeid onder extreem gevaarlijke omstandigheden. Om deze redenen pleiten veel partijen, van lokale NGO&#8217;s tot autofabrikanten en anderen, voor een meer ethische en verantwoorde winning van deze zeldzame mineralen. <\/p>\n<h2>Een tweede leven<\/h2>\n<p> De beste recycling is natuurlijk om de hele auto een tweede leven te geven. De elektrische auto&#8217;s die momenteel op de tweedehandsmarkt beschikbaar zijn, hebben een capaciteit van ongeveer 300 tot 400 km. Na vier tot acht jaar gebruik behoudt de batterij nog minstens 80 tot 90% van deze capaciteit. Met andere woorden, ze zijn zeker niet afgeschreven voor dagelijks gebruik en zijn veel goedkoper dan een nieuwe EV.
